So my friends and I held a tournament over the weekend to find the best video game player in the world/my group of friends. My friend Luke designed the entire thing, from the brackets and tables required to keep the event tight, to the trophies up for grabs in every category and the coveted golden joystick to go to the eventual winner.
At the start I’m going to say that you need a few things in order to run a competition between you and your friends. First and foremost is someone who loves holding these types of events and will nerd out in the appropriate amount. For us, Luke is that person and I think everyone who attended had a great time because of it.

The contestants in this epic competition to separate the titanium clad men from the play-doh boys were
Luke – The host. He is a gamer through and through with a substantial collection of games. Too many of which are unplayed as he will not quit Skyrim even though it came out two years ago and keeps crashing on him whenever he plays.
Rob – The competitive one. Also a long time gamer but the only one of us to also have a child. Will the time he’s spent watching his first born and not his XBL account come back to hurt his chances?
Doug – My brother in law and as such, the person I will be trying to beat as much as possible. He has been gaming most of his life but is slightly older than the rest of us so his hand eye coordination isn’t what it once was.
Barry – The FPS player. Has played many a game but found his home in halo.
Johny – The youngster who I pegged as a dark horse. However he also has an unfortunate addiction to Skyrim.
Me – You know me by now.

Round One Fifa 2009.

It was going to be a football game and apparently this was the only one that allowed you to set up a knockout tournament in the game. The tournament was set up so that we would have three head to head games with the two least bad losers playing again to find the other semi final contestant.

I’ll cut in here and say that another requirement of a tournament like this is alcohol. Because of this second requirement I am not going to remember all of this from pretty early on.

The opening four games saw Doug and Barry going out with Johny who, despite losing his first game, pulled it out of the hat in the losers game to find a place in the semi’s.
Rob and Johny faced off to find our first finalist. As they had played in the first round with Rob winning comfortably we all knew where this was going. Rob easily beating the youngster to meet either Luke or myself.
Both Luke and myself had gone through comfortably in the first round. This lead to a very nervy opening first half which ended 0-0. The second half though was when the pressure was released. My technique of trying to walk the ball into net started working and I scored 2 to take the tie 2-0.
The final match saw the very experienced fifa player (Rob) against someone who hadn’t played fifa since fifa 98 (Me). The opening half again saw some incredibly tight play with few chances. The silence in the room either showing how enthralled everyone was or how bored they were. I’m going with enthralled.
The second half played out in a very similar way. However Rob was able to pull forward and strike when needed in the 70 something minute. Some desperate moves were attempted but ultimately came to nothing as Rob took the first competition.
Rob 1st
David 2nd
Luke 3rd
Johny 4th
Barry 5th
Doug 6th

Round 2 House of the dead overkill.

We wanted a shooting game and this was the best of a not great bunch. It would have been awesome if we could have a copy of point blank to use with the PS eye. Alas we carried on with what we had and had a target of amassing the largest amount of points during a mini game available.
I haven’t played this game very much but I’m going to say that this game could and should be so much better. Why in a party game that offers mini games it doesn’t offer a party play option I have no idea. Why we needed to write down our scores I don’t know. That should all be part of the game.
Anyway. I started off and picked up 21,000. Having never played this game type I had no idea whether that was good or bad.

Luke then stepped up and promptly scored 31,000 without seemingly breaking a sweat. I suddenly feared the worst knowing that my best events weren’t till the end and I needed some points on the overall player board. Luckily everyone else didn’t get close to Luke’s score and I managed to pull off another second
Luke 1st
David 2nd
Barry 3rd
Johnny 4th
Doug 5th
Rob 6th

Those could be all wrong by the way. The drink had started to kick in by this point and we were no where near finishing yet. While caffeine keeps your reactions sharp, the same cant be said for vodka and your memory..

Round 3. Mario Kart wii

I have fun when I play Mario kart. Everyone has fun when they play Mario Kart. It is a fun game. There is a reason why I haven’t owned it since I was 10 though and that reason is because it cheats more than almost any game that has ever been created. It makes almost no difference if you are good or bad at the game. Find yourself in last place? Don’t worry you’ll pick up bullet bobs or blue shells or invincibility stars and find yourself in first place in no time. In first place nailing all the corners? Hitting your boosts from your corners? Don’t worry you’ll be back in last by the time the lap is through.

Saying that, Mario Kart did produce some very exciting races. Rob found himself in last place after the first lap against Barry (Can you guess what’s going to happen?) only to fight his way back to first, pushing Barry back to third. I was on the receiving end of elastic banding myself when Doug came back from the wrong end of the pack to beat me to first place even though I had lead the entire time. I’m not bitter, honestly. I really can’t remember much about the rest of this round as I was out and concentrating on what was coming next, plus drinking.
I think these were the final positions

Rob 1st
Luke 2nd
Johnny 3rd
Doug 4th
David 5th
Barry 6th

This would be a good point to split this evening up. Partly so I can go and check with Luke so he can let me know what actually happened due to the written records we kept. I think the standings overall so far are as follows.

Rob 1st 32 points. 2 Wins
Luke 2nd 25 points. 1 Win
David 3rd 22 points.
Johnny 4th 17 points.
Barry 5th 11 points.
Doug 6th 8 points.

Has Rob blown his load with his favorite games all coming first? Will Barry’s FPS skills smash the competition? Is Doug going to pull himself back from the bottom to claim back his pride? Actually, no he won’t. He really sucks.
